Sports guards, mouth guards and mouth protectors are different names for the same product which is worn over the teeth to protect them from direct blows. Mouth guards are an important piece of athletic equipment for anyone participating in a contact sport that involves falls, body contact or possible contact with sports equipment. This includes football, rugby, cricket, basketball, hockey, skateboarding, mountain biking, kickboxing, Thai Kwando – basically any sport that might result in an injury to the mouth.
Mouth guards typically cover the upper front teeth and are designed to protect against cut lips and chipped or broken teeth. If an orthodontic appliance (brace) or other appliance (such as a bridge) is worn on the lower jaw, then your dentist may suggest a mouth protector for the lower teeth as well.
A mouth guard must be resilient and tear-resistant. It must also fit properly and not restrict your speech or breathing.
Custom-made mouth guards offer all these qualities, and provide the most comfortable protection as they are individually designed and made either in a dental laboratory or in house. A simple impression of the teeth is all that is required.
